Round Rock ISD believes in a balanced literacy approach in the teaching of reading and writing. In balanced literacy instruction, the teacher’s goal is to support the reading/writing growth and development of students so that they are independent learners. The teacher uses a structure, gradual release of responsibility model of whole group, small group, and individual learning settings to identify and support the zone of proximal development* the specific area of challenge where rigorous instruction can support and expand the learning of each student.
* The difference between what students can do on their own vs.. what they can do with help; taking the student from the known to the unknown.
